OSCE Mission condemns escalating rhetoric and threats against officials and journalists in Bosnia

"Such threats are unacceptable. They represent a direct attack on democratic participation, media freedom, and the right to live without fear and intimidation. Competent authorities must react quickly and effectively to threats, intimidation, harassment, or other forms of pressure on journalists and media organizations, including in the online space. Those responsible for such acts must be held accountable in accordance with the law," the statement reads.

While acknowledging that public criticism of officials' political statements remains a legitimate component of democratic debate, the Mission stressed that threats of violence against public figures are unacceptable, undemocratic, and potentially criminal. Political leaders at all levels have been urged to refrain from rhetoric that heightens tensions and to pursue concrete steps toward de-escalation.

The Mission also reiterated its condemnation of the glorification of individuals convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, referencing its recent August 28 statement emphasizing respect for victims over the veneration of perpetrators. Officials hold a distinct responsibility to avoid using their platform to deepen divisions or inflict further pain on survivors, with authorities called upon to swiftly sanction incitement, the denial of established judicial verdicts, and the glorification of war criminals.
