OSCE Mission condemns intimidation of BiH election officials

The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina has voiced serious concern over recent public calls for citizens to gather in front of the private residences of Central Election Commission (CEC) members Vanja Bjelica-Prutina and Jovan Kalaba. The OSCE states that such actions, which are taking place as the CEC prepares to decide on the potential termination of Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik’s mandate, constitute an unacceptable attempt to pressure the country’s independent electoral authority.

“The independence, integrity, and personal security of election officials are fundamental to any democratic society. Calls to intimidate members of the CEC represent a blatant attempt to interfere in the lawful functioning of democratic institutions. These activities must stop immediately. Political leaders have a responsibility to uphold democratic norms, not undermine them,” the OSCE Mission said in a statement.
The organisation further urged all political actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina to refrain from any form of pressure or incitement and to respect the independence and personal dignity of all CEC members.
The Mission emphasised that it will continue to closely monitor developments in the country.

“OSCE reaffirms its full support for the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina in carrying out its duties impartially and in accordance with the law,” the statement concluded.
