Secessionist rhetoric poses a serious threat to regional stability and unity, runs contrary to the Dayton Peace Agreement, and risks undermining progress achieved so far, the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina said on Wednesday in a statement to FENA news agency.

The Mission’s comments come in response to recent remarks by former Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik, who announced he would seek Russia’s support for a referendum on the independence of the Republika Srpska entity.

In an interview with Russian media, Dodik also stated that he plans to travel to Moscow soon to request that Russia use its veto in the UN Security Council to block the extension of the EUFOR “Althea” mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In this context, the OSCE Mission highlighted the importance of international security organisations such as EUFOR.

“They contribute to the safety and protection of all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, thereby creating the conditions for OSCE Mission activities aimed at strengthening stability, promoting reconciliation, and supporting strong democratic institutions,” the statement emphasised.

The Mission reiterated that the OSCE remains firmly committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It also urged all political actors to focus not on divisions or tactics that fuel tensions and mistrust among communities across the country, but on achieving tangible progress in the interest of all citizens.
