The outgoing U.S. Ambassador in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Michael Murphy, met with the member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Becirovic on Friday and reiterated "the determination of the United States to oppose anti-Dayton activities”, such as the unconstitutional celebration organised in the country’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity the day before.
“I reiterated the United States’ determination to counter anti-Dayton activities, such as yesterday’s unconstitutional commemorations in the Republika Srpska (RS) entity, and again affirmed the United States’ unwavering commitment to the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and multiethnic character of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, Murphy said, according to a post by the Embassy on X.
Previously, the U.S. Embassy highlighted that the Constitutional Court has ruled on multiple occasions that celebrating Republika Srpska Day on January 9 violates the BiH Constitution, as it coincides with an Orthodox religious holiday and contravenes provisions prohibiting discrimination. “This determination is based on law, not opinion”, the statement emphasized, underscoring that all entities under the Dayton Constitution are obligated to adhere to final and binding rulings of BiH institutions.
Failure to comply with these rulings constitutes a criminal offence under the BiH Criminal Code. The Embassy urged law enforcement and judicial authorities to take swift and decisive action to investigate any violations related to the celebration of this unconstitutional holiday.
