Police agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina have registered more than 140,000 illegal migrants who have passed through the country on their way to Western Europe since 2018, Zarko Laketa, Director of the Foreigners Affairs Service, confirmed on Saturday.
In an interview with local media, Laketa stated that the majority of these illegal migrants were nationals of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, and Bangladesh. He assessed that the current situation regarding illegal migration is under control and noted that the conditions in temporary accommodation centres for illegal migrants are continuously monitored, including checks on the individuals residing there.
During the summer, up to 1,500 people were housed in these centres, which are located around Sarajevo and in the Una-Sana Canton. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), illegal migrants typically stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina for no longer than a month, as their primary goal is to cross the border into Croatia and continue their journey westward.
The IOM previously conducted a survey among illegal migrants, in which over 70 percent of respondents reported that they had unsuccessfully attempted to cross the border at least once, with their attempts being thwarted by the police.
Laketa mentioned that Bosnia and Herzegovina is now fully implementing its obligations arising from readmission agreements with other countries regarding accepting illegal migrants. This year alone, Bosnia and Herzegovina has accepted back 1,800 illegal migrants who attempted to cross the border into neighbouring countries.
Simultaneously, 1,766 foreign nationals have been deported, with four individuals identified as posing a threat to the national security of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
