The European Union (EU) member states represented on the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) have stated that, in line with established practice, the next High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina should come from an EU member state.

In a statement issued by the EU Delegation, member states emphasized that they remain fully committed to appointing a successor to Christian Schmidt by the end of the month and that they value cooperation with the United States and other international partners within the PIC framework.

“We are determined to continue working and bringing positions closer together around a candidate who, as an integrative figure, is capable of cooperating with all actors involved in the implementation of the High Representative’s mandate, including domestic stakeholders,” the statement said.

The EU, it added, remains committed to the stability, security, and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to the country's path toward membership in the European Union.
