Police detain two Hungarians on suspicion of espionage near Tuzla

Two Hungarian nationals were detained in the Tuzla area on suspicion of espionage. In a conversation with Detektor, one of the detained men denied the accusations.

Those detained are Gyorgy Barath and Jozsef Gelencser, who were suspected of being Hungarian intelligence officers, Detektor has learned from police sources.
Barath denied the reasons for his detention and refused to comment further. Gelencser does not have publicly available contact information.
According to Barath’s LinkedIn profile, he is the director and owner of Barath & Partners, a company that provides security consulting and private investigation services. The European Association of Investigators has also listed his firm as a reference on its website.

According to the same profile, Barath worked as a counterintelligence officer from 1979 to 1989, and from 1990 to 1994 he served as a senior officer in the Hungarian intelligence service.
The Tuzla Canton Ministry of Interior (MUP) said on October 23 that on Wednesday it had received a citizen’s report indicating suspicious behavior by two unidentified individuals walking down a city street in Banovici.
“Police officers from the competent department responded to the report and, after conducting checks, determined that the individuals were Hungarian citizens G.B. (born 1952) and J.G. (born 1962), who, according to their statements, entered Bosnia and Herzegovina on October 20, 2025,” the MUP said in a statement.
After being detained, the men were handed over to the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Intelligence-Security Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (OSA) was informed of the case.

According to Detektor’s police sources, they entered Bosnia and Herzegovina through the Karakaj border crossing near Zvornik and were detained in the Banovici area, during which recording equipment and passports were confiscated from them.
They were later released, and their equipment and passports were returned to them.
