Population decline persists across Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Data released by the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Statistics Institute reveals that natural population growth remained negative in nine of the entity’s ten cantons during May. The West Herzegovina Canton stands as the sole exception, recording the only positive natural increase throughout the month.

The figures for May show 1,175 live births against 1,551 deaths, creating a natural decrease of 376. This resulted in a vital index of 76. Regarding civil registrations, 728 marriages were recorded during the month, compared to 106 divorces.

These figures reflect a broader trend observed throughout 2025, during which the West Herzegovina Canton was similarly the only area to maintain a positive natural increase. Across that year, the Federation saw 15,387 births and 20,541 deaths, leading to an overall natural population decline of 5,154.
