Prijedor miners launch hunger strike as mining operations reach bitter end

Driven to the limit, employees have initiated a protest by refusing meals. This hunger strike is framed not as a choice, but as a final attempt to highlight their desperate situation. Their sole demand is the immediate implementation of a social security programme and the payment of severance packages to prevent hundreds of families from losing their basic means of survival.

Estimates suggest that resolving this issue requires between 6 and 7 million Bosnian marks (approx. €3.07 million - €3.58 million). This sum represents the minimum social safety net for workers who have dedicated years to the company. Ignoring the situation poses a direct threat to the livelihoods of numerous families and carries significant health risks for those participating in the protest.

The hunger strike officially commenced on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at 3 pm during the second shift. Other brigades are scheduled to join their respective units by 8 pm tonight. Simultaneously, a group of workers from the Central Workshop began their protest at 3 pm within the company grounds, with the remainder joining at 8 pm.

The workers have stated they will remain at their workplaces in protest until their demands are met. They are calling on relevant institutions to act responsibly and without further delay, stressing that they are not seeking privileges, but the fundamental right to a dignified life.
