Private individual Schmidt cannot chair the OHR in BiH, Russia's Zakharova says

A private individual, German citizen Christian Schmidt cannot chair the Office of the High Representative, which is why the Russian Embassy did not take part in the Peace Implementation Council's session on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a Thursday regular press conference in Moscow.

“The meeting of the political directors of the Peace Implementation Council in Sarajevo was held without the participation of Russia. It happened for the first time in a 26-year history of multilateral efforts to help resolve the (1992-1995 Bosnian) conflict. We have repeatedly reiterated to our board partners that a private individual, German citizen Christian Schmidt, cannot chair such an advanced, organized board. This undermines the status of the entire international community in BiH. Unfortunately, our concerns have not been taken into account. We refused to join the final communiqué of the meeting in Sarajevo, which was adopted on December 8. We believe that such a document is an open violation of the internal affairs of sovereign states, as well as an example of obvious distortion of the real situation in the state,” Zakharova said.

The Russian Federation did not participate in the latest session of the Peace Implementation Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina, refused to sign the joint communiqué after the session, and issued a separate statement on what they think about the conclusions of the session.

Zakharova added that everything that is happening in BiH is an attempt to impose other people's interests on the citizens of BiH.

“It is another attempt to impose someone's interests on the citizens of BiH. We are concerned and believe that such interests only exacerbate the crisis caused by external factors in BiH, they don't contribute to the creation of inter-ethnic dialogue, mutual understanding, trust and a united agenda. I suggest you take a look at the statement of the Russian Embassy in Sarajevo, published on the Embassy's website, which was published by the media in the region. We call on all international actors in resolving disputes in BiH to respect the principles of the Dayton Peace Agreement, as well as the 25-year-old practice of multilateral cooperation, in order to normalize the situation in the country as soon as possible,” Zakharova concluded.
