The remains of 14 genocide victims committed in Srebrenica in the summer of 1995 are ready for burial at the collective funeral that will be held on July 11 this year at the Srebrenica Memorial Center in Potocari.

The youngest victim to be buried this year is seventeen-year-old Beriz (Omer) Mujic, born in 1978 in Zvornik. He was killed in July 1995 in the Suceska area near Bratunac, and his remains were exhumed in May 2023 in the Srebrenica municipality region. He will be buried next to his brother Hazim, who was buried in Potocari in 2013.

The oldest victim to be buried is Salic (Ibrahim) Hamed, born in 1927. He was 68 when he disappeared in the summer of 1995 in the area of Zepa. His remains were exhumed at the Slap site in Zepa in May 2014.

The spokesperson of Bosnia's Missing Persons Institute, Emza Fazlic, told FENA that the Efendic brothers, Hasib and Camil will be buried together this year.

They disappeared in the area of the Baljkovica locality in the summer of 1995, and their remains were exhumed from different graves in the Srebrenica region, that is, in the Kula and Potocari localities in 2011 and 2006.

Fazlic stated that the Commemorative Center in Tuzla still holds the remains of 11 other victims of genocide who have been identified with the help of DNA screening, but the families have not yet given their consent for the burial, mainly due to the incompleteness of the bodies of these victims.

There are also the remains of another 49 victims who were identified with the help of DNA screening but the families in these cases have not yet started official identification or confirmed the identity obtained through DNA analysis and gave their consent for the burial of these victims.

“Hundreds of remains stored in the Commemorative Center in Tuzla are awaiting the reexhumation process so they would be added to the remains of victims that were found and buried in previous years.

This year, the re-exhumation process will begin on July 15 and the remains of 78 victims will be re-exhumed this year. Their remains that were later found and identified will be added. The reexhumations will last until July 22,” Fazlic told FENA.
