Scores of people gathered at the Tuzla Commemorative Center on Sunday to attend the funeral of well-respected Srebrenica journalist, Salih Brkic, who passed away on May 12 at the age of 75.
A number of journalists said they learned the job from Salih Brkic, that “he peered into every soul in Srebrenica and taught them about the genocide”.
“He lived journalism,” said retired journalist Almasa Hadzic, adding that she remembers how Brkic would report on excavations of mass graves and one particular case where she saw him cry at the site.
“He tried to comfort a father, whose wife and two children were being dug out of the grave, and Salih's tears started to run down his face. And then he tells me: ‘We are journalists, but we are not made of wood,'” she remembered.
“I believe there isn’t a Srebrenica mother who he didn’t speak to”, she added.
Before retiring, Salih Brkic worked for Radio Banovici, then for Radio Sarajevo, TV Sarajevo, and finally the public broadcasters of BiH and the Federation (FBiH) entity.
