The Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milanko Kajganic, along with officials from the Special War Crimes Department, met with Serge Brammertz, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), and his team.

During the meeting, they discussed several key issues, including the efforts of the BiH Prosecutor's Office in prosecuting war crimes, strengthening regional cooperation to combat impunity for such crimes, and the search for missing persons. Other topics included cooperation with victim associations from across Bosnia and Herzegovina and broader areas of responsibility shared between the BiH Prosecutor's Office and the IRMCT.

The BiH officials briefed Brammertz on their plans and progress regarding war crimes cases, including indictments and prosecutorial decisions, through the end of 2024. They also discussed the implementation of the State Strategy for handling war crimes cases and the transfer of less complex cases to entity-level prosecutors and the Brčko District.

A key topic was regional cooperation among prosecutors in addressing war crimes cases. The BiH officials requested further assistance from Brammertz and his office in processing cases that have stalled due to procedural or other obstacles. This support is particularly crucial in cases involving individuals under the “A” classification from the former ICTY, where suspects or accused persons are avoiding extradition by hiding in neighbouring countries.

The Prosecutor's Office of BiH, along with the Special War Crimes Department, reaffirmed their strong commitment to combating impunity for war crimes. They emphasized that this work will continue with the support of the IRMCT, which remains an essential international partner in these efforts.
