Residents of Donja Jablanica and surrounding areas, severely affected by the catastrophic floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 4 October, gathered again on Sunday for a peaceful protest to express dissatisfaction with the authorities' response.
Organisers explained that the protest and gathering would last a symbolic 19 minutes to honour the 19 victims of the floods.
Protesters carried banners bearing the names of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
“We demand urgent measures to ensure the safety of homes. We call on authorities to find ways to act more quickly because life must move on. There is a need to assess the safety of quarries and landslide zones. Is there a risk of renewed stone movement in the quarry?” they stated during the protest.
They further emphasised:
“Structural assessments of damaged residential units must be conducted. This gathering holds special significance as we want to pay tribute and recite a prayer for our neighbours who lost their lives. For 19 minutes, in memory of 19 victims, we will stand together at this spot.”
Meanwhile, restoration work began on Saturday on the railway line in Donja Jablanica, one of the hardest-hit areas in southern Bosnia during the October floods.
The floods and landslides that struck Herzegovina and central Bosnia on 4 October claimed 27 lives and caused damage estimated at 270 million BAM (approximately €138.5 million).
