RFE learns: No agreement on EU accession talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina

N1

The heads of the cabinet of European commissioners failed to agree and recommend the opening of accession negotiations for Bosnia and Herzegovina in their progress report, Radio Free Europe (RFE) learned from reliable sources in the European Commission (EC).

A possible recommendation on the opening of membership negotiations was a general idea of some commissioners when the preparation of the report began.

However, according to reliable sources from the meeting, there was “great resistance” to recommending the opening of this process for BiH.

The meeting ended without agreement and the report for Bosnia is now “stuck” and the European Commission's college, which consists of all the commissioners of this institution, who will decide on it on Wednesday, November 8.

Namely, the heads of the cabinet discussed the enlargement package, which also includes separate reports for each country that wants admission to the European Union (EU), for two days.

While the recommendation for the opening of accession negotiations is almost certain for Ukraine and Moldova, as well as the recommendation for candidate status for Georgia, it was initially considered that a positive decision for BiH would also be a message from Brussels to the entire Western Balkans region.

However, as it is known, a large number of commissioners believe that the content of the progress report for BiH “does not justify the recommendation for the opening of accession negotiations.”

If the recommendation to open negotiations between Brussels and Sarajevo is not included, this year's enlargement package will only be positive for the countries of the Eastern Partnership.
