Authorities in the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina have requested the initiation of legal proceedings against five former commanders of the Croatian Army (HV) and the Croatian Defence Council (HVO), prompting a strong response from Croatian President Zoran Milanovic.

Speaking at a formal ceremony marking Croatian Armed Forces Day, Milanovic called the move unacceptable and declared that "this harassment must stop."

The ceremony, held at the Croatian Ministry of Defence in Zagreb, commemorated Armed Forces Day, Croatian Army Day, and the 34th anniversary of the founding of the Croatian Armed Forces.

In his speech, Milanovic confirmed that indictments from Bosnia and Herzegovina had recently arrived, targeting Croatian wartime commanders, and emphasised that Croatia has been dealing with such cases for years.

"When will these indictments against Croatian wartime commanders stop coming from Bosnia and Herzegovina—30 years after the war? They keep arriving. I dealt with this ten years ago as Prime Minister. Soon, people who were previously acquitted will be indicted again for alleged crimes against Serb or Bosniak forces. The verdict against the so-called 'Prlic Six' from The Hague is being used as a basis for these new charges. This must stop. The agony and pressure placed on Croatia—sometimes from one side, sometimes from another—must end. It’s pure political manoeuvring," said Milanovic.

Retired Croatian Army general Ljubo Cesic Rojs confirmed to Nova TV that four indictments had been delivered to Croatia on May 2, relating to events in Bosnia’s Posavina region.

"The names should be disclosed by Croatia’s top officials, who are fully aware of these indictments. They target senior commanders of the Bosanska Posavina Operational Group, as well as lower-ranking officers. One of the highest-ranking commanders is accused of events that occurred during the defence of Posavina on November 6, 1992, when Bosanski Brod and Derventa fell," Rojs said.
