A peaceful gathering in support of the people of Ukraine was held in Sarajevo on Saturday. Organisers of the 'We Stand with Ukraine' rally said this was to show the support of Sarajevo and its citizens to all innocent victims of suffering, hatred and terror.
Citizens were carrying the banners reading ‘Sarajevo loves Kyiv’, ‘Sarajevo is Ukraine’, ‘Stop Putin’, ‘Glory to Ukraine'…
Sarajevo Mayor Benjamina Karic said that Sarajevans know the best and feel the most what the Ukrainians are going through now.
“We experienced aggression, survived a siege. We would like to show solidarity. The City of Sarajevo has allocated 20,000 marks (some 10,000 euros) from the budget reserve and will pay the amount to the Red Cross of Ukraine. We hope that the people of Ukraine will not suffer as long as Sarajevans and Bosnians and Herzegovinians did,” she stressed.
Charge d'Affaires at the Embassy of Ukraine in Sarajevo Serhii Miniailovi asked everyone to pay the respects to all the victims in his country.
“Anger, horror, rage, revenge – itfeels like these and all other words are too old and wasted to express the emotions after seeing the photos and footage from Ukrainian cities,” he said, wondering how is it possible to stay blind or neutral to the suffering and sorrow among the millions of people in Ukraine.
“I thank you for not being indifferent, for finding a way to show you care,” he told those who gathered in Sarajevo on Saturday.
