A peaceful rally in support of the Palestinians in Gaza gathered around a thousand citizens of Sarajevo, who marched from the Old Town's central square down the Ferhadija pedestrian street, conveying messages of peace and calling for aid for the besieged enclave.
“Given the recent tragic events in Palestine, where dozens of journalists, medical teams and civilians have lost their lives, we believe it is of crucial importance to gather and show our support in these difficult times,” said the organiser, an independent youth group, ahead of the rally.
The organisers also said it was their wish to send a message from Bosnia and Herzegovina that they condemn “all forms of violence and genocide that is taking place in Gaza.”
“This is not a war but a genocide and ethnic cleansing against the people of Gaza,” said Safija Tadefi, one of the organisers.
She expressed satisfaction with the number of citizens who attended the gathering.
The organisers also made a comparison between what is happening in Gaza now and what was happening in Bosnia in the 1992-95 period, and the world's reaction to all that.
“Everyone is watching and doing nothing to stop that war,” one of them said.
The protestors ended their march on the Square of the Killed Children of Sarajevo.
Sarajevo police was securing the gathering.
