Sarajevo besieged by smog: Authorities issue urgent health warnings

The Institute for Public Health of Sarajevo Canton (ZZJZKS) has reported alarming levels of air pollution across the region, with the Air Quality Index reaching "very polluted" and "extremely polluted" categories at most monitoring stations. This degradation of air quality represents a serious risk to public health.

The most critical conditions have been recorded in Ilidza, Novi Grad (Saraj Polje and Otoka), Vogosca, and Hadzici, where the air is officially characterized as extremely polluted. In the Centar municipality, specifically the Bjelave area, air is very polluted, while Vijecnica and Ilijas remain in the polluted category.
Meteorological data from the FHMZ predicts continued fog, low cloud cover, and weak southern winds (1 to 2 m/s), accompanied by temperature inversions. Consequently, no significant clearing of the pollution in the Sarajevo valley is expected on Wednesday.
Mandatory health recommendations
Vulnerable Populations: Children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses are strongly advised to remain indoors.
General Public: Residents should avoid spending time outdoors and refrain from intense physical activities.
Outdoor Workers: It is recommended to limit strenuous labor and use FFP2 or FFP3 respiratory protection masks.
Protective Measures: If going outside is unavoidable, the use of FFP2 or FFP3 masks is advised. Note that these are intended for short-term use and do not offer absolute protection against all pollutants.
Authorities also stress the importance of maintaining indoor air quality as the external atmosphere continues to pose a severe health threat.
