Sarajevo Canton’s Prime Minister Edin Forto, signed a notarial contract on Wednesday in the presence of the Veterans' Affairs Minister, Omer Osmanovic, for the purchase of the building of the former "Kon-Tiki" concentration camp with the associated land in the Sarajevo settlement of Vogosca, the ultimate purpose of which will be the establishment of the "Museum of the Suffering of the Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina".
The museum will feature the events from 1992 to 1995 and permanently bear witness to the suffering that the forcibly detained citizens of Vogosca, Sarajevo, Nahorevo, Sokoc, Ilijaš and Visoko went through, as well as the torture they survived in that place, and in the “Bunker” camp, which was located next to the facility.
After the Sarajevo Canton Assembly gave its consent last week, the signing of the notarial contract with the owner of the aforementioned building and land, Anka Beganovic, began.
The Canton allocated 750,000 Bosnian Marks (some €380,000) for the purchase of the building and land.
Minister Osmanovic thanked everyone who contributed to the beginning of the realization of this project.
“By signing this contract, we are starting the process of refurbishing the ‘Kon-Tiki’ area, all with the aim of cultivating a culture of memory and remembrance of everything we’ve experienced and gone through,” said Minister Osmanovic.
Previously, the Ministry of Veterans’ Affairs undertook the necessary activities in order to resolve property-legal relations, as well as the purchase of the mentioned building and transfer it to the ownership of the Canton of Sarajevo via the Municipality of Vogosca, the Institute for the Construction of the Sarajevo Canton, and the Public Enterprise “Memorial Fund of the Canton of Sarajevo”.
