An increase in the concentration of sulfur dioxide was recorded at the automatic measuring stations of the Canton of Sarajevo on Friday morning.

The elevated values of this pollutant in the Canton area are the result of long-distance transport of SO2 from the north, and considering the sources of emissions from that direction, the Kakanj Thermal Power Plant stands out as the largest source of sulfur dioxide.

The highest measured SO2 values since this morning were recorded in Ilijas and elevated values were also recorded in Vogosca and Bjelave.

Due to the high values of SO2 in Ilijas, the Cantonal Public Health Institute emphasized that people should avoid spending time outdoors in that area.

Taking into account the direction of the wind and meteorological parameters, due to which it is suspected that the transport of SO2 from the direction of Kakanj contributes to air pollution in the Sarajevo Canton, the Ministry of Utility Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning and Construction of Sarajevo Canton requested the Federation (FBiH) entity’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism to carry out monitoring of polluters of TPP Kakanj and their results of continuous monitoring of emissions and to determine that no out-of-the-ordinary situation caused a higher emission of polluting matter compared to usual.
