In her address, the Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karic, pointed out that the independence of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which “we restored on March 1, 1992, we jealously, meticulously and resolutely guard.”

“Independence is not obtained once and for all, that's why we remind you every year how independence is preserved, maintained and strengthened in every part of the country and every form. The moment when we take it for granted and when we think that it is unquestionable, that is when our independence is most vulnerable,” Karic said.

“That is why,” the Mayor said, “we must work hard and build always and everywhere, let's strengthen our economy, social and health care system, our armed forces and police, our judiciary, energy independence, expand our diplomacy, improve our education system, build our country stone by stone and in this way let's strengthen and build our independence.”

Attacks on Bosnia’s independence from those who do not like the rest of this country are not unknown, she said. Karic noted that the people protecting the country are not afraid of these attacks, but they do not underestimate them either.

“Today, when we celebrate Independence Day, we are also reminded of the importance of preserving the values of the multicultural, multinational, sovereign, integral and independent state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is the moral obligation of every Bosnian and Herzegovinian, regardless of nationality or religion,” Karic stated.

Sarajevo Canton Prime Minister Nihad Uk recalled that many lives were unfortunately lost for the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which the young generation should always be reminded of.

He noted that the preservation of independence is a fundamental principle of the Sarajevo Canton Government and that March 1 is an opportunity to remember the struggle for independence, but also a day when we should talk about the years ahead and the challenges we face in the process of building a democratic society and a prosperous future for all citizens.

An appropriate cultural and artistic program was arranged as part of the formal academy, and representatives of all levels of government, as well as political and public life in Sarajevo and the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, attended.
