The Cantonal Court in Sarajevo has sentenced Adem Suman to a total of 40 years in prison for the murder of 19-year-old Faris Pendek. The sentence consists of 39 years for the murder charge and an additional year for inflicting minor bodily injury.
The Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor’s Office had previously sought the maximum penalty of 45 years. Prosecutor Iva Kurilic emphasised during final arguments that the available evidence clearly confirmed the defendant's guilt. She noted there was no known motive, highlighting that the accused and the victim were complete strangers.
Suman was held responsible for killing Pendek in January 2024, during what was described as a violent and reckless outburst. The court heard that, on the night of January 28, around 11:30 pm, Suman, who did not have a driver’s license, deliberately blocked the path of a Citroën carrying four young men at an intersection in the Sarajevo neighbourhood of Otoka.
Remaining in his own vehicle, Suman moved to the passenger side and began physically attacking the occupants through the open window. He reportedly punched two of them before retrieving a firearm from the glove compartment and striking them again with the pistol.
He then discharged a single round through the same open window, fatally striking Faris Pendek in the chest. The prosecution detailed that the attack was unprovoked and lacked any apparent justification, further reinforcing the severity of the crime.
Suman was found guilty based on the indictment’s detailed account of events and the weight of evidence presented throughout the trial.
