The Cantonal Court in Sarajevo delivered its verdict on Friday in the case of the 2018 murders of Sarajevo police officers Adis Sehovic and Davor Vujinovic. Aleksandar Macan and Savo Marinkovic were found guilty and sentenced to a combined total of 60 years in prison.
Aleksandar Macan received a 15-year prison sentence, including eight years for the murders and an additional six months for grand theft.
Savo Marinkovic was sentenced to 45 years, including 23 years for each of the murders and six months for grand theft.
Time spent in custody will be credited toward their sentences. Both defendants were exempted from covering trial expenses, and their detention has been extended for up to nine more months. The verdict is subject to appeal by both the defence and the prosecution.
The courtroom saw a significant turnout of police officers from the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Interior, attending in solidarity with their fallen colleagues.
The trial concluded on November 4, with prosecutors presenting evidence that Macan and Marinkovic were caught attempting to steal a car on October 26, 2018, in Sarajevo’s Alipasino Polje neighbourhood. Upon being confronted, the two opened fire on officers, firing at least 20 rounds.
Officer Adis Sehovic was killed instantly, while his colleague, Davor Vujinovic, succumbed to his injuries hours later.
A third suspect, Marko Trifkovic, previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
This landmark case has deeply resonated with the local community and law enforcement, serving as a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face in the line of duty.
