Unknown persons laid flowers and lit candles at a Sarajevo's central square in honour of Russian opposition politician and Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny, who died in his prison cell last week.
A plaque with Navalny's picture and message in Russian were put together with flowers and candles at the Liberation – Alija Izetbegovic Square.
During the day, a passer-by destroyed the memorial, but the broken pieces of the framed photo and a written message were collected and then put back on the same spot by a Russian man who came to pay his respects.
British Ambassador to BiH, Julian Reilly, also honoured the Russian opposition politician.
“In memory of Alexey Navalny,” he captioned the photo posted on social networks.
Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison in August, after he was found guilty of creating an extremist community, financing extremist activists and various other crimes. He was already serving sentences of 11-and-a-half years in a maximum security facility on fraud and other charges he denies.
Navalny fell unconscious and died on Friday after returning from a walk at the penal colony in Kharp, northeast of Moscow, according to the prison service.
His family was told a day later that he had died from “sudden death syndrome” and the official verification of the cause of death had been extended and that it was unclear how long it would take.
They were not allowed into the morgue in Kharp but the staff also did not respond if his body was there, according to Navalny's spokesperson.
Navalny's wife Yulia Navalnaya directly accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of her husband's death and said she would battle against the Kremlin to create a new Russia.
The Kremlin denied involvement in the opposition politician's death.
