A bomb was thrown at the house of Irfan Cengic, the head of Sarajevo Stari Grad Municipality, on Monday early morning, causing material damage but with no injured people, according to police spokesperson.
Reportedly, the explosion occurred at 3:20 a.m.
Cengic said following the incident that the goal of the explosion was to “intimidate” him and stop the processes he has launched.
“Throwing a bomb on the house where my family and I live will not discourage me from continuing the processes we promised the people,” he wrote on social networks, noting that this refers to the process of “the return of the state property to the people from those who have been usurping it for years.”
Cengic stressed that he will not give up in what he is doing.
“This is a continuation of the threats I have as an elected official to stop implementing laws, decisions, findings of auditors, inspectors, prosecutors so that they can continue to abuse municipal resources. Recently, representatives of embassies asked me if I was afraid to lead processes, my answer was the same as today. God and people have given me the trust to lead difficult processes, I will not give up even a millimeter, because if the first person of the community retreats under pressure, what can ordinary people expect tomorrow when they come to their door,” he said.
Cengic is a member of the Social Democratic Party, which is a part of the ruling coalition in the Federation entity and in the state-level institutions. In the 2022 local election, he was elected for the Federation entity House of Peoples, the parliament's upper chamber as a member of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly.
In the 2023 early election, he was elected the Head of Sarajevo Stari Grad Municipality with 62.96 % of votes.
