A protest organized by an informal group of citizens in front of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) building in Sarajevo ended on Monday evening. The reason behind the protest was the dissatisfaction with the amendments to the BiH Election Law and the Constitution of the Federation (FBiH) entity, which were imposed by the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, on the day of the General Election.
In the end, several thousand citizens from 15 cities and municipalities across BiH gathered in the BiH capital, according to the organizers, and one of the people present was Mujo Aganovic, the president of the Disabled Paraplegic Veterans’ Association of the Federation (FBiH) entity, assessed that the “Dayton Peace Disagreement” is currently in force in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He stated that with the latest decisions of High Representative Christian Schmidt, the Dayton Agreement was “completely broken, trampled and run over”.
“Imagine that, when it comes to changes to the Electoral Law, the Venice Commission gave its opinion, and these decisions now contradict it. What is the meaning of that, what are we talking about? Please let us remain dignified and upright,” Aganović told the citizens gathered in front of the OHR.
He added that he does not know if Schmidt understands the determination of dissatisfied citizens, but that the previous and today's protests “should be a signal to him.” He also recalled that the bearers of the state's sovereignty are its citizens.
“Imagine the international community, as an arbitrator for the implementation of the Dayton Agreement, tells the citizens who are in favour of a civic, democratic and functional state to come to an agreement with the others [who are against it]. Who should we negotiate with? With those threatening us, who tied soldiers on peacekeeping missions [in BiH] to pillars? Would you introduce this practice in your countries,” Aganovic asked the international community and concluded for himself what the scenario would be if something similar was done in Germany.
“In your country, distinguished High Representative, there would be five million Germans on the streets of cities, so don't give us moral lessons. We understand very well why we are here,” Aganovic said, receiving great applause and cheers from everyone who came to the protest.
