During China's recent National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, photographer Chen Liwei led a group of ten photography enthusiasts on a 14-day tailored tour across Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). As Xinhua notes, many travelers are drawn by nostalgia; Chen explained that his group had long been fascinated by the Balkans due to classic Yugoslav films like Walter Defends Sarajevo. Seeking to capture authentic daily life, the team focused on Sarajevo’s old town streets, religious sites, and interactions with welcoming locals.
This journey highlights a growing trend toward customized travel. Xinhua writes that demand for private, tailored Balkan tours has jumped by over 30 percent in the last two years, according to local tour guide Zhao Yiming. Travelers increasingly favour flexible itineraries built around personal interests over traditional, large-group tours with rigid schedules.
Xinhua points out that interests vary distinctly by generation. While older Chinese tourists often seek out locations linked to historical films and wartime history, younger visitors lean toward city walks, prolonged stays, and local lifestyle experiences. This shift has prompted travel agencies to design more diverse routes highlighting cultural heritage and lesser-known destinations.
The hospitality sector is already feeling the positive impact. Xiaoxin Xu of Hotel Grand Sarajevo reported full bookings for rooms reserved for Chinese guests during the holiday, alongside serving hundreds of Chinese diners daily at the hotel restaurant.
Reflecting on his journey, Chen expressed hopes to share his photographs online to encourage more visitors to experience the country firsthand, signaling ever-closer cultural ties between China and BiH.
