Sarajevo to observe Day of Mourning in memory of 1,601 children killed during siege

Sarajevo is to mark a solemn Day of Mourning on 5 May, as the Canton observes its annual day of remembrance for the children killed during the 1992-1995 siege. The designated date, established by the Sarajevo Cantonal Government in 2023, serves as a permanent tribute to the 1,601 young lives lost during the conflict.

In accordance with official protocol, flags will be lowered to half-mast on all Cantonal government buildings, public enterprises, and educational institutions. The Sarajevo Canton Press and Protocol Service confirmed that the measure is intended to ensure the victims are remembered with the highest degree of formal respect.
Broadcasters and media outlets have been advised to adjust their programming to reflect the gravity of the occasion, with a specific request to refrain from airing entertainment-based content.
Authorities have called upon the public to observe the day with quiet dignity, urging citizens to show solidarity with the bereaved families and to honour the memory of the city’s youngest victims through appropriate conduct.
