"A breath of freedom reached the city through the tunnel", this is how the Sarajevo Tunnel of Salvation, meant salvation during the 1992-1995 siege of the city, is most often described.

Thousands of shells fell on the BiH capital during the war. According to UN data, an average of 329 per day. The city cried out for food and weapons.

The most famous way to get out and enter the besieged Sarajevo was the airport runway. But running those 450 meters was full of uncertainty and danger. Therefore, in November 1992, field tests began in order to determine the possibility of building an underground facility under the runway. Tests were not promising due to the geological characteristics of the soil and the risk due to the proximity of enemy positions. At that time, it was estimated that there was nothing to lose anyway, so the work began.

Today, the Tunnel of Salvation marks the 30 anniversary of the siege of Sarajevo with Open Days during which all BiH citizens and guests can visit the Museum of the Tunel of Salvation and see numerous archival footage, testimonies, photographs, as well as part of the tunnel that is still open to visitors.
