International envoy in Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt, who oversees the peace implementation in the country, visited the Potocari Memorial Centre on Friday and paid respects to the genocide victims.

Schmidt officially took office of the international community's High Representative in August this year and this was his first visit to the eastern Bosnian town.

His predecessor, Austrian diplomat Valentin Inzko imposed changes to the Bosnian Criminal Code earlier this year, banning genocide denial and glorification of war criminals.

Two international courts ruled that the 1995 mass killing of Bosniaks in Srebrenica was an act of genocide.
