Adis Ahmetovic, who will compete for a seat in the German Bundestag this year, is one of two candidates for the parliament originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina. In his first interview for Bosnian media, Ahmetovic said that regardless of his German citizenship, he is still loyal to BiH.
The young politician, a member of the German Social Democrats (SPD), was born in Hanover to Bosnian immigrants, who fled the country in 1992, the beginning of the war.
He graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences but said he entered politics at the age of 15 as a young social-democrat, with an intention to make changes.
“I was the leader of Young Socialists and now I am the Social Democratic Party leader in Hanover. I am the youngest Bosnian in this,” he told N1, in the first interview for Bosnian media.
As a candidate for the German Bundestag, Ahmetovic said he stands a good chance to win a seat.
“I am in the lead ahead of the other candidate and I have a good chance to enter (the parliament),” he said, adding that so far he has never lost in any elections he was part of.
Asked if he could do something for Bosnia and Herzegovina, in case he achieves his goal in the elections, the young politician said he would like to see the Bundestag dealing more with the Balkans and BiH.
His loyalty to the country of his parents is not questionable.
“I have been visiting BiH regularly until corona (pandemic). I love Bosnia, I learned the Bosnian language and all about its culture, and I am very loyal. No matter where I am in Germany, I am always doing the same for BiH,” said the Bundestag candidate, noting that he remains a Bosnian regardless of his German passport.
He also sees a good opportunity in potential cooperation with Christian Schmidt, the German diplomat who was recently appointed as the High Representative in BiH.
