The Srebrenica Genocide Museum, which represents the third and final phase of the multi-year cooperation between the Srebrenica Memorial Center and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), should be completed next year and opened on July 11, on the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

Accompanied by a large Turkish delegation, TIKA president Serkan Kayalar visited the Potocari Memorial Center, where he was welcomed by the director of the Memorial Center, Emir Suljagic. Kayalar first paid tribute to the victims of the genocide committed in July 1995 by laying flowers and entering the book of impressions.

Kayalar and Suljagic then visited the cemeteries, and the former battery factory, more precisely the place where the Genocide Museum in Srebrenica will be set up. On that occasion, Suljagic informed Kayalar about the plan and concept of the museum.

Referring to the signing of the Thursday protocol, Kayalar recalled that, for the last three years, TIKA has been working on the project of converting the former battery factory into a museum and that in the first two phases of the project, work on the renovation of the roof, as well as adaptation and installation work, was carried out.

“Today we are here to sign the protocol after which we’ll start working on the museum, according to the instructions given by our president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. God willing, we will put this project into operation as a Genocide Museum that will be at the world level,” said Kayalar.

The director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center, Emir Suljagic, pointed out that the Republic of Turkey is the largest donor, and that TIKA is the largest institutional donor of the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

He added that they “hope that the opening of the Genocide Museum in Srebrenica will also be a central event in Potocari for the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the genocide”.

After a tour of the installation in the battery factory, the official signing of the protocol between TIKA and the Srebrenica Memorial Center followed, and it was signed by Kayalar and acting Chair of the Administrative Board of the Srebrenica Memorial Center Aida Barucija.
