The United Nations General Assembly is set to vote today on a resolution regarding Srebrenica, proposing July 11 be declared the International Day of Remembrance for the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.

Murat Tahirovic, President of the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide, expressed confidence in the resolution's adoption, highlighting its basis on facts from international courts.

“After numerous obstacles and opposition from Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the Republika Srpska entity, their efforts inadvertently amplified the resolution’s profile globally,” Tahirovic remarked. He added that this exposure could lead to broader awareness and education on the Srebrenica genocide worldwide, a significant positive development.

Tahirovic criticized attempts to block the resolution, noting they were unsuccessful. He emphasized that the resolution's passage would facilitate global commemorations of July 11, extending beyond the UN headquarters to other parts of the world, and enable financial resources for genocide studies.

Kada Hotic, a prominent member of the Association Movement of Mothers of Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves, echoed these sentiments. She emphasized the need for truth recognition and accountability from the perpetrators, underscoring that the resolution affirms the reality of the Srebrenica genocide, despite ongoing denials by RS and Serbian officials.

Hotic stressed the importance of educating future generations about the genocide to prevent similar atrocities, highlighting that acknowledgment and acceptance of historical truths are vital for reconciliation.

The resolution, co-authored by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, and Germany, and supported by over 30 UN member states, is anticipated to formalize the commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide as a pivotal historical event.
