Ten cattle have died from anthrax on a farm in Herzegovina, marking the first confirmed outbreak of the disease among animals in Bosnia and Herzegovina this year.

According to the Federal Civil Protection Administration, the deaths occurred this week on a farm in Bosansko Grahovo. All remaining livestock have been placed under quarantine.

The local veterinary station in Livno took blood samples from three of the dead animals after signs of infection appeared. Tests conducted at the Veterinary Faculty in Sarajevo confirmed anthrax. Cantonal veterinary inspectors then implemented all legally required measures.

The dead animals were buried in line with safety protocols, and the contaminated area was disinfected according to national regulations on controlling and eradicating anthrax.

Anthrax is a highly dangerous infectious disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. It can also spread to humans. Infected animals are not treated; instead, strict measures are imposed, including quarantine, carcass disposal, disinfection, rodent control, and mandatory vaccination.

The Croatian Veterinary Institute has reported several dozen anthrax cases in livestock across Croatia this summer.
