Thirty-one years since the second Markale massacre: Remembering the darkest day of the siege of Sarajevo

Among the medical professionals who rushed to save lives that day was Professor Dr. Ismet Gavrankapetanovic, then a young orthopedic surgeon who sprinted to the old surgical department after sirens blared and the influx of casualties began. Recalling the moment he was told a true massacre was underway, Gavrankapetanovic noted that medical staff were met with injuries and human tissue destruction that defied ordinary human experience, facing the agonizing task of triage among 84 critically wounded citizens.

Surgeries continued uninterrupted throughout the day and night, concluding only at dawn on August 29 under severe wartime conditions lacking regular water and electricity supplies. While the marketplace bore the immediate horror of fallen civilian bodies, the hospital became the site of a desperate, day-long battle to preserve human life amid cries, silence, and unforgettable scenes of devastation.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Gavrankapetanovic emphasized that Markale serves not merely as a calendar date, but as a permanent warning to future generations and a solemn testament to the 43 lives extinguished. Remembering the tragedy remains a vital pledge to ensure that the destruction of innocent human lives is never repeated.
