Thousands march in Vienna to honour Srebrenica genocide victims

Thousands gathered in Vienna for a peaceful march commemorating the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, with participants coming from across Austria and beyond. The march began at Christian-Broda-Platz and continued through the city’s central streets, ending at Maria-Theresien-Platz, where the main commemoration ceremony was held.

The event opened with a moving performance titled "The Flower of Truth and Hope", symbolising remembrance and the resilience of survivors. Moderator Merima Rovcanin-Alickovic introduced a cultural program featuring artists Elnur Mujezinovic and Anel Ahmetovic, and poets Meliha Halilbahic and Fadila Arnautovic-Alic.

A video message by renowned Austrian artist Andre Heller drew particular attention, as he expressed solidarity with survivors and condemned the genocide in clear terms.

Organisers Damir Saracevic, Admir Mehmedovic and Azra Merdzan, from Consilium Bosniacum, stressed the importance of education, remembrance, and civic engagement.

Political and public figures also spoke, including Vienna MP Aslıhan Bozatemur-Akdag, former Austrian State Secretary Muna Duzdar, and world athletics silver medallist Amel Tuka, who shared personal impressions from his visit to Srebrenica.
The emotional highlight of the evening was the speech by genocide survivor Ramiz Salkic, joined by Saban Foric and Minister Sevlid Hurtic, who called for European and global solidarity in the fight against genocide denial and revisionism.
