Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to mark July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica was published in the Official Gazette of this country, Anadolu Agency reported on Wednesday.

The decision states that the genocide in Srebrenica, which the International Court of Justice designated as the largest genocide in Europe after the Second World War due to the murders of over eight thousand people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, left a dark stain on human history.

With the adoption of the Resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica by the UN General Assembly on May 23, 2024, July 11 was accepted as the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995.

The decision notes that this Resolution unreservedly condemns acts glorifying those convicted before international courts of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, including those responsible for the genocide in Srebrenica as a historical event, and advises member states to develop appropriate programs for preventing the denial or distortion of genocide facts and the occurrence of similar events in the future.

“In this context, July 11, which has been accepted to raise awareness throughout the world via special commemorative events, education and public awareness activities that will be held in memory and honour of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, will be marked in our country with the aim of sharing the pain and condemnation of genocide and crimes against humanity and it will be marked as the ‘International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995'”, the decision states, adding:

“The activities that will be organized as part of the commemoration of July 11, the International Day and Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica, will be carried out in cooperation with relevant public institutions and organizations under the coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I would like to ask you for information and help in providing all kinds of support and assistance needed by all public institutions and organizations without delay in order to implement the events that will be organized in this context in the best possible way”.
