Amid rising tensions in Lebanon, two Bosnian citizens—a mother and daughter—were successfully evacuated to Sarajevo on 12 October, the Embassy of Lebanon confirmed to Radio Free Europe. The situation in Lebanon remains precarious due to ongoing Israeli military operations and exchanges of fire with Hezbollah near the southern border.

According to Satko Bitanga, a minister-counselor at Bosnia and Herzegovina's Embassy in Amman, which also oversees Lebanon, the two women were safely brought back home. Meanwhile, three employees from the UN peacekeeping mission remain in Lebanon, reduced from five, as the conflict continues to escalate.

Bitanga assured that the Bosnian nationals who are still in Lebanon are safe and currently staying within United Nations bases. Aside from the UN personnel, two additional Bosnian women have chosen to stay in the country for now. “We are in contact with them. They have relocated from southern Lebanon, the area most heavily bombarded due to its proximity to the Israeli border. Currently, they are safe, staying with friends near Beirut,” the Embassy said.

Bosnia's Embassy in Amman is also responsible for Syria, where another Bosnian national has reached out. This individual, originally from Tuzla, arrived in Damascus 20 days ago, working as a fitness coach for a football club. He has reported that he is currently safe as well.

The broader regional conflict intensified after Israel launched a ground operation in Lebanon earlier this month, aimed at weakening Hezbollah, which has been exchanging cross-border fire with Israeli forces since the war in Gaza began. Hezbollah, classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, is a powerful political and military force in Lebanon, with its political party maintaining seats in the Lebanese parliament. However, the European Union has only blacklisted its armed wing, not the entire organization.

The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is worsening. Since 23 September, more than 1,300 people have lost their lives across the country, and the United Nations reports that some 700,000 people have been displaced. Amid these developments, even UN peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon under the UNIFIL mission have come under fire during Israeli military actions, further highlighting the volatility and danger in the region.
