UK MP Alyn Smith expressed concern over the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina in his recent speech at the British Parliament and called for urgent international action. "Let us not be the generation that looks back on this point and says, 'We could have done more'," Smith stressed.

Şmith was one of the speakers during the UK House of Commons’ debate on stability and peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, held earlier this month.

“It is important that we take stock of what is happening in Bosnia,” the MP representing Scottish National Party said at the beginning of his address.

“The price of peace is eternal vigilance and that's never been more true than what's happening in BiH just now.”

Smith stressed that the international solidarity and co-ordination have never been more vital and that there is a “number of things that we can and should be doing more of.”

He commended the work of the UK Government, however, noting that he would like to see further action.

“First, on focus, we need to make everyone aware in the region that we are paying attention to what is happening there, and it is relevant to us in our countries and to what is happening here. We need to give vocal support to the high representative, as a number of colleagues have said. He needs support in his job and full-throated support in the international forums where he is trying to win his arguments,” the UK MP said.

He also proposed further sanctions that would amke sure that “people are in no doubt that there will be consequences to malfeasance.”

“And thirdly on NATO. I do think it's a wonderful proposal – the establishment of a counter-disinformation centre in Sarajevo would be useful in countering the blizzard of disinformation and lies that we're seeing is trying to muddy the water and confuse people within the region,” he underlined.
