UK Western Balkans envoy says UK won't allow new conflict in Bosnia

Stuart Peach (Denis Sadiković / N1)

UK continues supporting territorial integrity, stability and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the UK special envoy for the Western Balkans Sir Stuart Peach told N1 Slovenia, noting also that his country won't allow a new conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Peach, who was appointed in December last year, arrived in Slovenia to meet its senior officials, with whom he discussed the situation in the Western Balkans and the impact of the Ukrainian conflict on the region.

Speaking to N1, the former Royal Air Force officer said that the UK will continue providing unambiguous and full support to the international community's High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina and to the international forces stationed there – the EU military employment and NATO-led forces.

He condemned the secession threats coming from Serb member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency Milorad Dodik, stressing that “as a good friend of the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina” the UK will not allow a new conflict to emerge in the country.

Asked if the Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the 1992-95 armed conflict in Bosnia, was in jeopardy, Peach replied that the UK continues supporting the peace deal, which serves as a framework for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He stressed that the UK also continues supporting territorial integrity, stability and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, noting that there need to be consequences for destabilising behaviours.

According to him, there are chances for good people in the country and one of those chances is the October vote.

He urged the political leaders to take part in the reform of electoral system, which he called “discriminatory,” and to show will for compromise in order to have the elections at the scheduled time.

Asked about the UK's role in the electoral reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Peach said that the UK provides help, partnership and, if necessary, technical assistance i.e. counseling.
