The play "Caligula" produced by the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater from Kyiv, will open the 63rd MESS International Theater Festival.

“We are honoured that a great work like the play ‘Caligula’ opens the 63rd edition of the Festival, especially since this adaptation comes from a country that is currently under aggression. The very symbolism of the theme of the text and the circumstances from which the play's team comes speaks of the importance of theatre art, which is and must be corrective even in the most difficult times. That is the mission of MESS, which inherits the experience of the “theatre under siege” phenomenon, and that is why we are proud that our Festival will be a platform for the presentation of Ukrainian artists at this important historical moment,” said Nihad Kresevljakovic, the Director of the MESS Festival.

Albert Camus’ dramatic text is one of the most significant theatre pieces of the 20th century. The play “Caligula” is directed by Ivan Uryvskyi, and the play features some of the biggest names in the Ukrainian theatre: Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Ksenia Basha, Olena Khokhlatkina, Akmal Hurezov and Roman Yasinovskyi.
