At a photo exhibition featuring his own photography from across Bosnia and Herzegovina, US Ambassador Michael Murphy underscored the value of the country's cultural heritage and the unity of its people. Held at the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Murphy’s address highlighted BiH’s rich landscapes and historical sites, as well as the inclusive nature of its cultural identity.
Murphy, an enthusiast of Bosnian history, expressed his gratitude to the museum, comparing it to America’s Smithsonian institutions to emphasize the essential role of cultural preservation. He noted that while Bosnia’s national cultural institutions belong to all its people, they have faced insufficient political and financial support from the government, which he described as “problematic.” He urged that these institutions be protected and cherished.
Reflecting on his two terms in Bosnia, Murphy said his initial time in Sarajevo from 2006 to 2009 sparked a lasting interest in the region. He shared how Bosnia's landscapes inspired him to take up photography, leading to a collection of photos taken on trips throughout the country since his return in 2022. In his travels, Murphy has been captivated by Bosnia’s natural beauty, from the “quiet haven of Miljacka River’s spring” to “the awe-inspiring Tisovica Valley.” He fondly recounted exploring both well-known sites, such as Mostar’s Old Bridge, and lesser-known treasures like the Kuslat Mosque in Zvornik.
In a powerful message, Murphy emphasized Bosnia’s multiethnic heritage, asserting that landmarks such as the Hajducka Vrata arch transcend ethnic divisions. “The splendour of Bosnia belongs to all its citizens,” he said, calling on all Bosniaks, Croats, Serbs, and others to find pride in the country’s rich heritage. Bosnia’s diversity, he stressed, is a source of strength and unity, not division.
Addressing the country’s political landscape, Murphy criticized leaders who emphasize divisions, portraying Bosnia solely through the lens of its tragic history. “Periods of darkness do not define this country,” Murphy argued. Instead, he highlighted the kindness, warmth, and talent of its people, saying they are united in their desire for peace, prosperity, and democracy.
Murphy concluded by celebrating Bosnia and Herzegovina as a unique, shared, and multiethnic space, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to explore and photograph it. His photo exhibit, he hopes, will serve as “a celebration” of Bosnia’s beauty and resilience.
