The ruling in the Sejdic-Finci case, which concerns the election rules and laws in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has not been implemented for 12 years and no progress has been made about this, US Ambassador Eric Nelson warned, recalling that some other rulings too have identified the shortcomings in the Constitution and that the time has come to solve this problem.
The ambassador also reminded that this matter is among 14 priorities set by the European Union, which would make Bosnia's membership application credible.
Speaking to N1's Nikola Vucic, he also stressed it was very important to have political talks on this and all other options that are on the table now. According to him, the dialogue will have to include the opposition parties as well as citizens, because every change that will be made requires the Parliament's activity.
There is a process for this sort of reform and constitutional change, which is clearly necessary, ambassador underlined.
According to him, some options that will be discussed might be surprising but every option will be discussed thoroughly and the Parliament will have a final say.
Asked if he is optimistic that this could happen soon, Nelson expressed hope the progress is possible during this year.
The US sees a great opportunity in the EU's call for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and his country will act alongside other allies to help BiH in that process which will require changes and important reforms, he noted.
The final result, the ambassador stressed, will depend on the will of political leaders, which is why it is very important to have everyone discuss this matter.
BiH has potential and can speed up the progress in this field but it will require compromise and consensus, the ambassador concluded.
