Any action towards the dissolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina would violate Dayton Peace Agreement and carry “grave consequences,” the US Embassy in Sarajevo said on Thursday, two days after the gathering organised in the northern city of Banja Luka, whose organisers conveyed messages in support of the independence of Republika Srpska, Bosnia's Serb-majority entity.

The rally was organised by the ruling SNSD party and its leadership in response to request of the opposition for the ballot recount for the post of Republika Srpska President, which is being carried out by Bosnia's central electoral authority.

The opposition leaders requested the ballot recount over alleged electoral fraud and organised protest in the entity's administrative centre.

“Election authorities have a responsibility to ensure the integrity of the electoral process, including by recounting ballots and other measures when circumstances warrant. The United States respects the right of peaceful assembly and protest. They are part of any democracy,” the embassy said.

However, the embassy stressed, “there is no justification for responding to standard election integrity and accountability measures with the dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric about secession that we heard Monday in Banja Luka.”

They emphasised that those seeking office in Bosnia and Herzegovina should respect the democratic processes and institutions that ensure that citizens’ voices are heard and stop presenting misleading and inaccurate information to the voting public about BiH’s electoral process.”

“The United States is committed to the principles of Dayton – that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a democratic, multi-ethnic, sovereign, and independent state with unquestionable territorial integrity. Neither Dayton, nor the Constitution of BiH, offers any entity the right to secede,” the statement said.
