We gave it our best. It is up to BiH leaders to build on and continue finding the courage to achieve a compromise that was missing all this time, the US Embassy to Bosnia told N1 on Monday when asked to comment on the failed election reform talks that took part over the weekend, adding that these compromises must be passed by the country’s Parliament.
“At the end of the weekend, we had a package of reforms that would implement the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights and enable all BiH citizens to run for the highest office in this country, increase the level of transparency and integrity of the election process, and improve the Federation (FBiH) entity's functionality. Unfortunately, the Democratic Action Party (SDA) and Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH) have not reached the compromise necessary to finalize this agreement,” US Embassy's public relations office told N1.
Political leaders must also redouble their efforts to adopt measures that address the integrity of the electoral process that their citizens demand.
“Free and fair elections are a fundamental democratic right of all citizens. The United States believes that this year's elections must be held on time,” the US Embassy concluded.
