Gabriel Escobar, the Deputy Assistant US Secretary of State, will speak on Thursday in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Congress House of Representatives about the engagement of the US administration in the Western Balkans, as well as the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Escobar, the Deputy Assistant Secretary overseeing policy towards the countries of the Western Balkans, is participating in a session organised by the subcommittee for Europe, Energy, the Environment and Cyber, which is composed of twenty members – eleven Democrats and nine Republicans.
Escobar will be talking about the American policy towards the Balkans at a time of intense tensions in the region, mostly regarding relations between Kosovo and Serbia, in Montenegro, but also in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This should also include the issue of the functionality of Bosnia as a state, particularly in light of the recent actions and announcements of BiH Presidency member Milorad Dodik, who is also the leader of the ruling party in the country’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity.
The recent developments have produced a discussion in the Balkan public on the possibility of imposing additional US sanctions on Dodik.
The Bosnian Serb political leader is already under sanctions since 2017 over what US authorities defined as obstructions to the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement. This implies a travel ban and the freezing of any property he might have in the territory of the United States, which also applies to the countries that joined this move.
