US special envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar told Serb member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency Milorad Dodik that threats of secession offer nothing to citizens of Republika Srpska, Bosnia's Serb-majority region, but “isolation and economic despair.”
Escobar spoke to Dodik days after the Serb leader announced a possibility of secession of the region within six months, unless some of the decisions of Bosnia's Constitutional Court concerning Republika Srpska are not revoked.
It is the US’ position that “threats of secession and rolling back reforms to state level institutions are anti-Dayton and offer RS citizens nothing but isolation and economic despair,” Escobar told Dodik, according to US Embassy's official Twitter account.
“DAS Escobar reiterated the United States’ strong commitment to BiH's sovereignty and territorial integrity as one country where both the Republika Srpska and Federation entities and the Brcko District are more prosperous and secure when leaders combat corruption, strengthen the integrity and fairness of BiH elections, and move forward with reforms that bring economic recovery,” said the statement.
