US support bolsters South Interconnection project: FBiH govt meets with USTDA and Bechtel

The meeting was attended by Federation (FBiH) entity Minister of Energy, Mining, and Industry Vedran Lakic, FBiH Minister of Displaced Persons and Refugees Nerin Dizdar, US Embassy Chargé d'Affaires John Ginkel, USTDA Chief Legal Counsel Sam Kwon, and Bechtel’s President for Regions and Corporate Relations, Justin Siberell.

Ministers Lakic and Dizdar emphasized that the presence of American investment and companies serves as Bosnia’s stability guarantee. They reiterated that the South Interconnection is the FBiH’s top energy priority, vital for the stability of both the domestic economy and the security of all citizens. The government informed the delegation that activities have intensified, including the continuation of an interstate agreement with the Republic of Croatia and preparations for amendments to the Law on the South Interconnection to allow for alternative implementation models, such as concessions.

Representing the administration of incumbent US President Donald Trump, Chargé d'Affaires John Ginkel highlighted the strong interest American companies have in investing in BiH. He stated that the United States views the South Interconnection as essential for the energy security and economic development of the entire region, further strengthening the partnership between the US and BiH.

USTDA representatives noted their history of financing feasibility studies and pilot projects, while Bechtel, one of the world's largest engineering and construction firms, presented its extensive infrastructure portfolio in the region. Participants concluded that significant opportunities exist for further cooperation to ensure the project’s success.
