Wildfires continue to rage across parts of Bosnia

The most challenging situation is currently on the left flank of the fire spreading from Dzepska planina toward the settlement of Brdjani. The fire also reignited in Zivasnica during the night, but firefighters from the Konjic Professional Firefighting Unit extinguished the blaze after a response that began at 1:42 a.m. and lasted until 3:05 a.m.

Another fire was reported above the hamlet of Golubic toward Dzepi. On Saturday, the Konjic firefighters received reinforcements from the Vogosca Professional Firefighting Unit, which arrived with three vehicles and eight firefighters. They were deployed to the right flank of the fire toward Dzepi.

Ground operations are also being supported by the Federal Civil Protection Specialised Unit, while members of the Prenj Forestry Service, mountain rescue teams, local residents and hunters remain involved in firefighting efforts.

The Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina are providing additional support from the air. Military helicopters carried out 14 flights over the Konjic fire on Friday, focusing on protecting the Brdjani settlement, and further aerial operations were expected on Saturday.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Armed Forces helicopters are also assisting firefighting operations in the Bosansko Grahovo area, while military personnel are providing support on the ground in Nevesinje.

Military crews are operating under extremely difficult conditions, including high temperatures, strong updrafts, dense smoke and inaccessible terrain. The Ministry described aerial firefighting as one of the most demanding operations conducted by the Air Force and Air Defence Brigade, requiring extensive training, experience and close coordination with teams on the ground.

The situation in another fire-affected area of Herzegovina, between the villages of Glumina and Lastva in the Neum municipality, is considerably better. The fire has been localised and its spread toward Glumina has been stopped, although some areas remain active. Firefighters continue to monitor and work at the site because of the large area affected. No property is currently threatened.

In the eastern part of the country, a wildfire that broke out on Friday afternoon in Novo Gorazde, Republika Srpska, also remains active, although the situation was somewhat calmer on Saturday morning. Smoke from the fire has spread to neighbouring Goražde.

Several members of the Novo Gorazde Volunteer Firefighting Society worked until late into the night to contain the fire, which had threatened a transformer station. The Professional Firefighting Unit from Gorazde responded within minutes after being called for assistance and helped prevent the fire from reaching residential buildings.

Local authorities said around ten houses had been at risk, including two that were directly protected by firefighters from Gorazde. There are currently no threatened residential buildings, but the fire remains active at several locations toward Ostri vrh, around a church and in surrounding woodland.

Firefighters are still dealing with smouldering tree stumps and hot spots, while authorities are seeking additional personnel and equipment to prevent the flames from spreading.

The combination of extremely high temperatures, dry vegetation and wind continues to pose a serious risk of renewed and rapid fire spread.

Firefighters have also recorded around ten interventions in the Mostar and Capljina areas over the past 24 hours.
